Iceland’s broken highway mended

iceland-sattelite24Iceland’s broken Route 1 highway, damaged by floods caused by the Eyjafjallajokull glacier volcanic eruption, has been fixed.

The road and bridge around Markarfljott have been fixed but remains closed to the public. Emergency vehicles will now be able to use the new bridge again, which is safer than the old disused bridge they have been using.

People wishing to drive the road will need to have a special permit from the emergency services and a very good reason, RUV reports. The Icelandic Roads Administration said last night that the road may now be serviceable, but it has not been surfaced and is still in a gravel state, meaning drivers must be extra careful.

Emergency services are reminding drivers that ash covered roads can become extremely slippery after rainfall.
